I set the display to turn off after one minute and switched off the light in the room. When the display turned off, I shone a LED torch on the video camera. Nothing happened. Then I switched on the room light. The display woke up again.

So I think it's correct what den.thed said. At least for the late 2009 models. And in Windows 7 under Boot Camp there's no option for adjusting display brightness according to ambient light, as far as I know.
